![]() The company this past week opened a new customer service training center in Atlanta, Ga., where trainees from across the country will gather to what customer service means at Google Fiber. In addition to providing faster, more affordable and more reliable service, Google has raised the bar for customer service in the handful of cities it serves (Kansas City, Austin and Provo). Construction began in June and Google said it will lay enough cable in the city to run from here to Canada. Google has yet to release a date when Fiber will be available, but you can subscribe to updates by visiting. (Those who opt for this service can pay the connection fee in $25 monthly increments over one year.) Budget-conscious customers can get a slower speed Fiber service - 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload - for free after paying the connection fee. With all the deserved hoopla over Google’s superspeed service, a second tier Internet service has gone largely unnoticed. The connection fee can be paid up front or divided into even payments over the life of the contract. There is also a $300 connection fee, but Google waives the fee when a customer opts for a two-year contract for Internet and TV or a one-year contract for Internet only. Instead, Google charges $70 per month for Internet only and $120 for Fiber plus TV. Needless to say, I’ll be switching to Google Fiber as soon as it’s available in my “fiberhood” - the name Google uses to section off about 800 homes in an area to connect to a fiber hub.Īlong with super speeds, Google’s pricing is fair and transparent, meaning no “limited time” deals that result in a big price increase when the promotional period is over as we’ve seen from traditional providers. ![]() I’m currently paying top dollar for Century Link’s hi-speed Internet and my download speed clocked in at around 25 Mbps (the direction you use when streaming a movie) and upload speed at under 5 Mbps, which corresponds to the time it takes to upload photos or other files to the cloud. Google Fiber is best known for offering superspeed Internet service reaching up to 1000 megabits or 1 gigabit per second download and upload, which is significantly faster than even the most expensive plans available from Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and Century Link.
